Museum Coordinator Steve Olsen is renewing the old Santa Fe Railroad Station, in Clifton, TX to its former status during the 1910 to 1915 era. He has invited the Club to join him on May 6th for the dedication and grand opening of the Edwin Olden Railroad Museum in Clifton. Members of the Club are on the DV list !!!
If you are planning to attend on May 6th, here are some items to help you start your planning.
Steve has blocked 15 rooms at the Velkommen Inn in Clifton for the nights of May 5 and May 6. You may elect to get the room for one night but be sure and tell them when you book it into your name. It's the only motel in town (very recently it was a Best Western franchise motel) so your options are pretty limited unless you want to get a room in Waco. The rooms are under Steve's name, so just call the hotel and tell them you want one (or more) of the rooms. Prices are $80 for a single king bed and $90 for two queens. They do serve a continental breakfast in the morning. The rooms will be released to open, first-come-first-served inventory on April 20, so make sure you call them to firm up your personal plan. The phone number is (254) 675-8999
There is some breaking news about events of May 6th that might affect your travel plans. You are on the list of guests for a private chartered coach from Clifton to Temple on the morning of May 6th. The time of departure and the exact departure location are still TBD but we expect something around 9am and in the downtown area. The coach will take the invited guests to the Temple Railroad Museum in Temple, TX where the Amtrak scheduled passenger train, the Texas Eagle, makes a scheduled daily departure northbound. With considerable assistance from Bob McLean in California, we have gotten Amtrak to graciously agree to do a "whistle stop" in Clifton so that we can all get off right in downtown Clifton. Lunch plans are a bit fuzzy now but we will either have box lunches for everybody or we will have something similar in Clifton. In order to plan our trip ahead, I am asking you to RSVP for the coach/train trip no later than April 3rd. We will want to fill the coach so we need to know if you can't come as soon as possible to backfill any subsequent vacancies.
There will be brief dedication ceremony at the depot building (weather permitting) and we will then open it to our guests and the general public.
More information will be distributed as it becomes available.
By the way, the museum is coming along nicely. We have put a new roof on, completed exterior and interior carpentry work to replace rotted wood and damaged interior walls and ceilings, installed a new electrical distribution system and new lighting, removed all the non-original interior walls and paneling from the original walls, removed the suspended ceiling to expose the original wood ceiling and are in the process of prepping the interior for a complete repaint in original Santa Fe depot colors based on historical paint chips generously loaned to us by the Temple museum. On Monday a new HVAC system will be installed. On the schedule are new flooring, new plumbing fixtures, complete exterior paint, installation of a reproduction brick passenger platform as well as two original, functioning railroad light signals and some landscaping to round it out. Then we will install the various display cases and the model railroad layout along with window shades and new exterior window screens. So still plenty to do but we are well on our way and ahead of schedule (and over budget !!!). It's not the Smithsonian but we think it will be a very, very nice facility for Clifton.
We look forward to seeing you at the depot on May 6th !!!
Steve Olsen, Museum Coordinator
